• New 450g bag size is available to order online

Moonroast’s online customers will be able to order their Moonroast Coffee in our new 450g bags from today. We have introduced this bigger bag size following feedback from our customers. To begin with, this new bag size will only be available online but if it goes down well then we will be offering it as an option to our retail stockists as well.

These bigger bags are a great size if you get through a lot of coffee and you’ll benefit from a cost saving compared with the 225g bags, which makes them all the more appealing. But to benefit from the greatest cost saving we recommend purchasing a burr grinder, you have to speculate to accumulate, buy our 900g bags of beans and grind your own at home.

Each 900g bag of beans bought equates to nearly a 5% saving on four 225g bags, ground or beans. Check out this link and get inspired to make the investment in a grinder, start saving and enjoy drinking better coffee at home!

  • The Great Taste Awards Winners Taste Challenge Competition

Thanks to everyone who visited Moonroast's stand at the Alresford Show this year to try and buy our award winning coffees. Lots of you also entered our fun taste challenge competition.

We'll be announcing the winner later in the week but we can at least tell you in the meantime which of the four Great Taste Awards coffees that you were able to sample on Saturday was in the competition pump pot.

If you guessed it was the 2-star award winning Arabica Decaff, you were CORRECTOMUNDO! All the correct answers will go into a coffee pot and the winner of the year's supply of coffee, of their choice will be drawn out and notified by email.

  • Great Coffee comes from a partnership: 50% Roaster & 50% Barista

So, barista training is vital, however great the coffee is, even if its won a raft of Great Taste Awards, including a top 3-star accolade (had to get that in!). Moonroast insists on 2-stage barista training for all the staff at all our customers’ cafes, gastro pubs, deli’s, farm shops or restaurants. We include it in the cost of our wholesale coffee.

The team from The Natural Deli, opening soon so look out for them in Bishops Waltham, and the Peat Spade, which started using Moonroast at the beginning of the year, came up to the roastery this week for the second part of their 2-stage barista training. And as far as Fran is concerned it doesn’t end there. It’s an ongoing thing. At least one of your team becomes an ‘Ambassador’ for all other staff members, current staff can pop up for a top up and new staff for full training. Most importantly it means you will make the best cup of coffee for your customers. Cafeconomy 2016* found that 81% of customers who visit a cafe will go where they discover the best coffee.

Serving better quality coffee is the way to increase turnover and grow repeat business as Libby Hayes, Manager at Chococo Winchester found when Chococo switched to Moonroast in early 2015: ‘Since establishing our relationship with Moonroast, Chococo has seen an increase of 200 cups of coffee per week and repeat custom from our café customers.  Fran and his team have been fantastic to work with, offering initial coffee tasting in the store to barista training on site, collaborating new grinders, ongoing advice and knowledge to the team in store and at the roastery.  (*1600 consumers and 100 café and coffee shop owners sampled.)

  • Moonroast Coffee has won FOUR coveted Great Taste 2016 Awards

Great Taste is the world’s most coveted blind-tasted food awards. It celebrates the very best in food and drink and this year Moonroast Coffee is one of Great Taste's stars! Literally! Out of 10,000 products to be judged, Moonroast Coffee was unanimously awarded a 3-star Great Taste Award for its Ethiopia, a 2-star Great Taste Award for its Guatemala, a 2-star Great Taste Award for its Decaffeinated Coffee and a 1-star Great Taste Award for its Peru/Ethiopia blend. And just to put that in to context 141 products were awarded a 3-star, 878 received a 2-star and 2,520 were awarded a 1-star accolade.

The judges, who tasted everything blind, described the 3-star Ethiopia as "one of the most complex flavours we’ve had in the last two days and of the 2-star decaf they said "we all enjoyed this individual, versatile, exceptional coffee and would drink it regularly. The competition was pretty tough and the judging, by over 500 of the most demanding palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists, rigorous. What a fantastic badge of honour to have, especially as Great Taste is widely acknowledged as a signpost to a wonderful tasting product. Look out for the unmistakeable black and gold Great Taste label on our bags!

And it doesn't end there. As a 3-star winner, the Ethiopia has gone forward to be re-judged for the 2016 Top 50 Foods and potentially a Golden Fork Trophy winner and even the 2016 Supreme Champion. So watch this space.
